IP intercom systems allows unprecedented voice quality, and call functionality for high volume, highly complex intercom systems.
An IP Intercom system typically uses standardised VOIP (Voice Over IP) communication protocols such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and IAX2 (Inter Asterisk Exchange 2).
The use of standardised protocols allows the intercom system to communicate to any number of voice over IP devices, servers and and services. IP intercom systems will require a VOIP service provider, or server such as Asterisk and Elastix.
Each intercom door station is then programmed to connect to the VOIP server / service, allowing the door station to act as a standard handset / extension.
Each call button is then assigned its own outgoing number, which is then dialled whenever the call button is depressed.
The door station outputs can then be configured to activate on one or more DTMF key presses from the receiver handset, to allow functions such as pressing the Hash button to release a door, open a gate, or turn on / off a particular device.
Functionality can be greatly increased by further configuring the VOIP server, allowing the intercom system to properly integrate with a telephone IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system.
Intercom station buttons can be assigned to dial DTMF digits, much like a normal telephone handset, allowing the intercom call station to interact with the voice prompts.
Buttons can be assigned for an emergency response, concierge, after hours access, even pre-recorded informative messages.
And because the system utilises IP networks, there is no physical limit as to the distance between the intercom door station, VOIP server / service, and the receiving handset. The caller using the handset has no idea that the person with whom they are speaking to may be in the next building, the next block, city, state, or even another country !
